Magnolias On A Wooden Table is one of the still-life canvases of 19th-century American painter Martin Johnson Heade. After marrying, Martin Johnson moved to Florida. Since he became known for his tropical and exotic landscapes and worked from real-life observation, the change of locations affected his theme choice. During his later years, he not only painted beautiful canvases of salt marshes and other seascapes, as he also began a great series of still-lifes. Along with the apple blossom, the Magnolia was among his favorite subjects.
Martin Johnson Heade was one of the US' most prolific artists from his period. The singularity of his work stems from his early contact with art through American folk painters, passing through his personal and artistic bond with Frederic Edwin Church, with whom he worked in the same studio for years. Despite the commercial interest that his tropical settings arose in many buyers, he wasn't fully integrated into the New York art circuit. He was for many years a rather obscure figure. Since 1940, his paintings have been re-evaluated, and his importance to early American art is now recuperated. Magnolias On A Wooden Table was sold by Christie's Auction House in 2000 at USD 1,491,000.
For many years, Heade's work has been considered a minor part of the Hudson River School. Even though this circle of painters certainly backed up the painter's admiration for landscape, his work is still very different from theirs. Some other scholars also associate him with Luminism, an informal movement of painters that shared the same aesthetic principles as Frederic Edwin Church: the dramatic rendition of lighting and an epic tone.
Magnolias On A Wooden Table is an oil on canvas with dimensions of 36.2 cm x 55.9 cm. Unlike his work in South American settings, in which there is an abundance of different elements such as trees, mountains, and other figures from the wildlife, Martin Johnson Heade's still-lifes focused only on the blossoms and almost abstract background. A fabric of vibrant color, a constant feat of his Magnolia pictures, is missing here. The painting was created only with hues of brown, white, and green. The two flowers occupy the center with their bright white petals, while the brown table, when receding, becomes almost indistinguishable from the background. The painter's mastery can be seen in the different aspects of the surfaces, from the flowers, leaves, table, and the background.
