Martin Johnson Heade's Orchid And Hummingbird Near A Mountain Waterfall oil canvas explores two subjects that became characteristic of the painter's oeuvre: plants in general, especially apple blossoms, Cherokee roses, Magnolias, and Orchids, and the unique grace of the hummingbird. The artist stated that he had a "hummingbird craze," and his fascination with the bird can be seen in plenty of his works. Orchid And Hummingbird Near A Mountain Waterfall can be considered one of the best examples of Heade's Naturalist attention combined with a dramatic use of lighting.
Martin Johnson Heade was an American landscape and still-life artist. Other than lectures with folk artists from his town, the painter didn't go through any art institution. To complete his education, Martin Johnson went to Rome, where he practiced relentlessly and visited many exhibitions. He returned to the US and debuted as a professional artist. Eventually, the painter moved to New York. After his return, he was interested in other painting genres, and the New York cultural environment helped to flesh his admiration towards landscape painting. While living and working there, the painter became acquainted with the Hudson River School. This contact marked a significant shift in his way of working, with Frederic Edwin Church's artwork affecting him the most.
Even though some critics used to place Martin Johnson's work under the Hudson River School, recent scholars and historians tend to criticize this notion, stating that his work is too different to be closely associated with the famed circle of painters. Besides the painter's highly personal brushwork, one of the main differences is his choice of subjects. Martin Johnson was fascinated by tropical settings. He took several trips to South and Central America to see the local vegetation and make sketches and other small-scale canvases. Orchid And Hummingbird Near A Mountain Waterfall was one of his late efforts on the subject.
The oil painting Orchid And Hummingbird Near A Mountain Waterfall measures 38.2 x 51.5 cm, a standard rectangular shape that was largely used by the artist. The sky in the background was painted with white lead and varying tones of grey. The combination of strong blotches of color gives the sensation of an atmospheric view. Far in the distance, there are some mountains on the right side of the picture. Right below, a waterfall can be seen, portrayed in fast and precise brushstrokes, flowing in a light blue. The leaves and branches were painted with the wet-on-wet technique, and their many textures were achieved through varied use of the brush's direction. The vegetation was painted in luscious warm greens, while the orchid and hummingbird are seen in the forefront, at the left portion of the canvas. The main figures were depicted with light green and pink and are the standouts of this harmonious composition.
