Orchids Nesting Hummingbirds And A Butterfly is a beautiful oil on canvas created by the landscape painter Martin Johnson Heade. Two strong motifs in Heade's body of work - the hummingbird and the orchids - were rendered in an almost scientific view, as the artist aimed to depict every detail of the plants and birds accurately. Still, the atmospheric treatment, the use of colors, composition, and combining landscape with still-life are unique traits of the American artist's work. The painting evokes a calming and contemplative mood, presenting nature in a harmonious way.
Born in the state of Pennsylvania, Martin Johnson Heade never had a formal artistic education. His first lectures were through two local folk artists. To complement his studies, he spent two years in Rome painting and refining his style. He returned to the US and debuted in the professional circuit with a portrait. Seeking a better working environment, he moved to New York. There he worked in the same building as some of the Hudson River School artists, which inspired him to focus on landscapes. Heade's key influence, who also became a close acquaintance, was Frederic Edwin Church. Church's style, which was deeply worried about the depiction of seasonal changes and the effect of lighting, became known as Luminism, an aesthetic principle that many painters commonly shared in the New York circle.
Martin Johnson's fascination with hummingbirds is one of the distinctive traits of his oeuvre. In 1863 and 1864, the painter went to Brazil to observe up close the different species. The artist was moved by the Brazilian settings, especially its flora and fauna. He created many sketches and small-scale works while he was there. More than forty-five works on paper and canvas were done on the theme as he hoped to publish a book of illustrations called The Gems of Brazil. Unfortunately, the project didn't come to fruition.
As it's usual on Martin Johnson Heade's paintings, the background features a luminous light with varying degrees, capturing the effect of the clouds. The sky can be seen in two small spots of light blue, while the clouds go from white to dark grey, giving the sensation that it might rain. On the borders of the painting, the viewer can see the vegetation far from the main scene in the middle of the composition. The trees are painted in his usual warmer green, with a multitude of tones to give the texture and volume of leaves and branches. The most vibrant colors are on the subjects, the orchids' light pink and the hummingbird's intense yellow. In an image full of details, the painter created a harmonious artwork through his masterful use of color and grading.
