Tropical Landscape With Ten Hummingbirds is an oil on canvas painted by the artist Martin Johnson Heade. The picture deals with two motifs that he worked for decades and almost became synonymous with his name: plants in general, emphasizing Orchids and Magnolias, and the captivating hummingbird. Working with tropical settings that combined both, in a series that became known as The Gems of Brazil, Heade achieved a good reputation among art dealers and patrons. Tropical Landscape With Ten Hummingbirds is one of the most complex compositions of Heade's oeuvre, creating a fluid reading of the work through the position of the vines and the birds.
Martin Johnson Heade was a singular 19th-century American painter. From his relatively simple way of painting, which he learned from folk artists, Heade developed a unique way of working with brushstrokes, learning how to depict different surfaces. Some areas of his late paintings had four layers of paint, creating a strong color effect. He became friends with Frederic Edwin Church, which became a significant influence on his work. The dramatic and exquisite way that Church used light affected Heade's style and encouraged him to paint landscapes.
For many years Heade was thought of as part of the Hudson River School. Even though he met many painters of the group and had similar interests in light and landscape, Heade's work is significantly different from theirs. For instance, the Hudson River School painters worked with regional settings, while Johnson made many pictures based on his trips to South America. The other one was his late interest in still-life after he married and moved to Florida.
Tropical Landscape With Ten Hummingbirds is a 45.7 x 76.2 cm oil painting. The birds occupy the whole picture, from the left to the right of the rectangular canvas. The background was painted with the familiar grey hue that Heade used for the sky's atmospheric changes. Behind the grey clouds, we see parts of a clear light blue sky. The hummingbirds were rendered in various colors: pale greens, luscious reds, and a deep blue one on the top right. There are mountains in the distance, giving us a sense of depth. The vines were painted with a vibrant green, while the flowers were done with a light red. Heade usually painted birds alone with flowers or in pairs. On the other hand, this painting has an unusual amount of figures compared to his other works, showing his ambition to portray the birds exuberantly.
