Mrs. Cassatt Reading to her Grandchildren is an impressive pastel drawing by Mary Cassatt. The original piece is dated 1880 and belongs to the Smith College Museum of Art. Mary Cassat was one of the American expatriates that made a career in Europe. Cassatt started her education at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art when she was only 15. However, she found the institution too rigid and conventional. Attracted to painting innovations in Europe, Cassatt moved first to Italy and then to Paris. There, she became part of the Impressionists and, ultimately, Art History. Mrs. Cassatt Reading to her Grandchildren is a portrait of Cassatt’s mother reading for the artist’s nephew and nieces.
Mrs. Cassatt Reading to her Grandchildren was painted on a rectangular canvas, emphasizing its width. The upper section of the drawing opens to a window revealing the outside: bright yellowish-green grass, indicating it’s a bright sunny day. Here, Cassatt employs all of her high skill with pastels, using both rigid lines, as in the left side of the window, and smearing the colors until they gain a cloudy-like quality, which is the case for the yellow close to her mother’s face.
Cassatt’s mother, the “grandmother,” is located on the right side of the composition and holding a red cover book. Around her are three children: one on her right, who has her back to the audience, one on her left, with most of the face visible, and one in front of her, with whom we can see the face’s profile.
The scene was mostly done with warm colors: the faces are orange and pink, their hair displays an intense red and yellow-like tint. The grandmother’s clothes, and part of the children, are bright pink with a few spots of yellow, harmonizing with the whole image’s palette. The exception is of the boy who faces her, who wears a blue blouse with geometric patterns. The heads, prominent round visual elements, act as attracting points to the viewer’s eye: the audience’s gaze travels from one head to another, absorbing details, their glances, and expressions. As much of Cassatt’s oeuvre, the picture is a happy portrayal of family life.
