Portrait of Alexander J. Cassatt and His Son, Robert Kelso Cassatt is an intimate 100.3 cm x 81.3 cm (39 1/2 x 32 inches) oil painting by the American artist Mary Cassatt. Cassatt was among the most well-succeeded female painters from her period. Starting her education in the US, she felt too restricted by the conventions at the local schools. Coming from a well-to-do family, Cassatt was well acquainted with European literature and art. Seeking a more motivating and more unrestricted environment, she moved to Paris. There, Cassatt became part of the Group of the Independents, or as they are better known now, the Impressionists. Portrait of Alexander J. Cassatt and His Son, Robert Kelso Cassatt shows the artist's brother and her nephew inside her own house, keeping her interest in portraying people in interiors.
The original portrait is at The Philadelphia Museum of Art. Cassatt's most beloved theme, which tied in to some of the hardships that she faced while becoming an artist, was that of the relationship between women. She often depicted women in interiors and a lot of time with family bonds, such as mother and daughter. Portrait of Alexander J. Cassatt and His Son, Robert Kelso Cassatt is an exception since she portrayed two men, father and son. In fact, her brother Alexander was even more famous than her during their lifetime, as he was a wealthy businessman.
The composition is intimate: Cassatt placed the point of view close to the figures as if the person seeing the scene is sitting near them. With her usual masterful style, Cassatt painted their faces with gestural brushstrokes but extreme fidelity. Her use of red and pink for their blushing faces allied with small strokes of light blue to give a sensation of transparency and lightness to the skin created a beautiful portrait. Alexander is focused, looking at the newspaper in his hands, while Robert looks ahead distractedly. Their figures merge with their intense black clothes. Cassatt painted the interior (supposedly, her own apartment) with fast, fluid, and broad brushstrokes. The surroundings are cold, and she employed light blue and red on objects, harmonizing with the colors of the faces.
