Spring Margot Standing in a Garden (Fillette dans un jardin) is a captivating 67.9 x 57.8 cm (26 3/4 x 22 3/4 in.) oil painting by Mary Cassatt. The original artwork is dated from 1900 and now belongs to the Met’s collection. Cassatt was a significant American painter from the end of the 19th-century. Concluding her artistic formation in Europe, as many other Americans did during her time, Cassatt developed a stunning body of work based on domestic scenes of women. Women are at the center of Cassatt’s subjects, and with a great technique, she extensively explored their relationship as mother, daughter, and sisters. Spring Margot Standing in a Garden depicts an adorable young girl during a time of leisure.
This sweet portrait was painted on a rectangular canvas and shows a young girl with an oversized dress and hat. The model was Margot Lux, who lived close to the artist’s home and appears in more than 40 works by Cassatt. The artwork belongs to the artist’s late phase. Cassatt lived until 1926, but she stopped painting around the 1910s because of her eyesight. Cassatt’s mature manner is characterized by a simplified approach, the use of broad brushes, and gestural brushwork. However, she still had the skill to perfectly depict human skin and features, a common trait to her close and problematic friend, Edgar Degas.
Another distinctive feature of the piece is something rather subtle but extensively employed by the artist: a very spontaneous viewpoint. Margot’s gaze is distractedly looking beyond the frame, giving the painting a sensation of a snapshot that the artist took while the child was playing. The girl has a subtle smile on her face and is holding her dress. Her vestments are also sliding on her right shoulder, a signal that she was probably playing or running right before she posed for the painter. The whole picture is very bright: her dress was painted with pink, white, and light yellow tonalities, as well as red details. The girl’s colors contrast with the green and blue background but are still very bright and intense. While perfectly depicting Margot’s face, the environment was loosely painted, as Cassatt used much bravura brushwork.
