The Sisters is a beautiful oil painting by Mary Cassatt. The original piece is now at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, and it is dated from 1885. Mary Cassatt was a significant artist of the 19th century and one of the most impressive American expatriates who built a career in Europe. Cassatt's work is formally incredible: she had a more realistic vein than many Impressionists but masterfully used gestural brushstrokes. The blurry contours of her figures gave a true sense of energy and movement to them, something that can also be found in the pastel drawings of Edgar Degas.
The Sisters was painted on a rectangular canvas with two little girls occupying most of the picture. They look innocently at someone (or something) that is out of frame. By portraying their gaze out of the painting, Cassatt gave the work a photography-like sensation: an intimate image frozen in time. This kind of spontaneity in how the figures pose and how the image is composed was deliberately chosen to oppose the rigid and theatrical-like compositions of the Academic painters who were dominating the art world.
The two sisters are a bit to the left of the composition, leaving a larger area on the right corner. Their dresses were loosely painted, mostly with white strokes and some blue details, and some of the initial sketches can be seen through them. The girls' skin and hair were also depicted spontaneously but have a more refined quality than the rest. Through synthetic and direct brushstrokes, Cassatt masterfully gave life to these two innocent faces. The girls are against an abstract background created with broad green, yellow, and blue strokes merging in a dynamic rhythmic arrangement.
Mary Cassatt was born in the US to a very affluent family. Early in her life, she traveled to Europe and had an education in music and the arts. After some years as a student in the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, which she joined when she was just 15, Cassatt moved to Europe. Women weren't allowed in the École des Beaux-Arts at the time, so she applied for the independent classes of Gérôme, one of the most impressive Academicians. After many years of sporadic participation in art shows and many refusals, Cassat was invited by Edgar Degas to join the Impressionists. This connection helped her continue the free nature of her work and her Modern approach to subjects centered around everyday women.
