Umbrellas In The Rain is a beautiful 35.4 x 53 cm (13 15/16 x 20 7/8 in.) watercolor on paper by the American Post-Impressionist artist Maurice Brazil Prendergast. The original artwork was made in 1899 and currently belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Maurice Brazil Prendergast was one of the early American modernists, and his work focused on urban life, depicting leisure scenes of the bourgeoisie in parks, beaches, and similar spaces. His style became progressively abstract over the years, influencing other artists. Umbrellas In The Rain belongs to the painter's more inventive artworks.
Prendergast was part of the Ashcan School, also known as The Eight, an artistic movement that sought to fortify the Modern influences coming to American art. Their work often depicted people in urban environments, going against regionalist trends, and often focused on the life of poor citizens. They were mostly former students of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where they were taught by the foremost Realist painters of their time. They advocated for a style of work that was darker and rough and became the significant influence of the great Edward Hopper.
The work is characterized by very diluted watercolor, transforming the structures and figures in blotches of color, something that was powerfully prevalent in Prendergast's artworks. This technique is primarily employed in the picture's bottom area. The diluted watercolor is used to make the puddles of reflection of the walking people and the buildings around the place—the colors in this region range from light green to brown, gray, and red.
In the composition's lower area, some children are also carrying umbrellas. They are dressed in white, blue, yellow, and red clothing. The composition conducts the audience's gaze through the line of people that are walking through a bridge. The bridge is filled with many colored umbrellas and passing silhouettes, contrasting with the more geometry-shaped structures behind the people passing. In addition, there are poles in front of the bridge, which create vertical lines that also differ from the more fluid approach found in the lower areas. The upper composition's portion is filled with similar patterns of the architectural structures, which are repeated throughout the whole background.
