Michelangelo was one of the greater artists from the High Renaissance period, and the most talented sculptors born in the Tuscany region. Il Divino, nickname given for the excellence of his work in the painting of the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling, never had a love for art. Still, after many discussions with Pope Julius II, he accepted this commission.
The planning and execution of this masterpiece were turbulent. The Pope and the artists had constant fights and misunderstandings, with both of them having hot tempers. The painter had many complications to find artists to help him to finish and had to do almost all the frescoes by himself.
Part of one of the most famous and magnificent murals painted in history, the fresco of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Erithraea, portrays one of the prophets. The Sybil leader of the Apolo’s temple in the Ionia region, today Turkey, has predicted the coming of Christ and his judgment on humanity, according to Emperor Constantine, in the fourth century.
Reveling the sacred message using an acrostic, with the hidden message being passed through the first letter of each phrase, the pagan prophet informed her ancient community in Greek, forming the words: Son of God, Jesus Christ, Savior, and Cross. The emperor found evident the divine influence on the Sybil. When his fact was confronted by other scholars, Constantine replied with his famous discourse, present in the Oration of Constantine, chapters 18 and 19. Saint Augustine also mentioned the pagan poem in his texts that can be found in The City of God, his magnum opus.
In the fresco, the Erithraea prophet is displayed sitting on a stone chair. With her strong arms, she is reading a big book, with a calm and confident expression. Her left leg is crossed above the right in a relaxed way, showing her feet. She is wearing a colorful set of dresses and cloaks, with white and red on her trunk, green, orange, and white on her waist and legs.
There are two puttos behind her and the book that she is reading. One of them, with a concerned expression, is using a torch to heat the plate that he is serving her. The other one helps the Sybil to sustain the weight of the book, which is resting on top of a wooden desk covered in blue silk.
