Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
The legendary sculptor, painter, architect, and poet Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born in the warm and beautiful region of Florence, in Italy, 1475. One of the most influential artists from history, Michelangelo produced some of the most famous and replicated works of art, with a notable mention for the Pietà, David, and the ceiling and altar of the Sistine Chapel, Vatican.
This piece was one of the last pictures painted by Michelangelo, the round canvas, or tondo in the Italian language, display the Holy Family in all her splendor. Featuring gentle brushstrokes and vivid colors, the great master was commissioned by Agnolo Doni to celebrate the marriage with the young and beautiful Maddalena Strozzi, from a powerful and influential family from the Tuscany region.
In the first plane of the masterpiece, Joseph is displayed tall and imponent, using a purple shirt, indicating his royal lineage from the House of David. The yellow color on his pants indicates the divine aspect in his figure, and he is drawn with a sober and serious expression, looking with paternal eyes to the infant Jesus.
Below him and sitting over her bent legs, the Virgin Mary was portrayed also using colorful tones. The Holy mother uses a delicate salmon dress and blue skirt, with a green mantle around her waist. She has her arms up around their beloved child, and there is a debate around the scene in which some scholars argue if she is taking the baby Christ from Joseph or passing him to his mundane father.
In the background, John the Baptist is represented as a child bathing in a pool, representing the cleansing and purification that baptism brings to the individual. Behind the saint, five nude male figures are drawn discussing and pointing to each other, waiting for their turn to be baptized by Saint John.
This magnificent artwork is still in its original frame, a round and golden carved piece with inscriptions of stars, vegetation, crescent moons, and lions’ heads, with the details connected by ribbons, indicating the union between the coats of arms from both the Doni and Strozzi families. In recent days, this masterpiece is housed at the Galleria degli Uffizi, one of the most visited art museums in Italy.
