Painted between the years of 1536 and 1541, this masterpiece made by Michelangelo covers the whole altar of the Sistine Chapel, in the Holy city of Vatican. Depicting the judgment and the second arrival of Jesus Christ, the great master portrays the deserving humans rising to the heavens while the son of God, surrounded by angels, analyze their behavior and faith. With more than 300 characters, most were originally painted without clothes, but in a later modification, and some areas covered by draperies.
Commissioned first by Pope Clement VII, the fresco was finished under Pope Paul III's care, and with him being more reformist and severe, this affected the final treatment of the work. At the bottom left of the fresco, the artist attained to represent the disgraced ones that failed Christ's judgment, falling out of his grace. On the right are placed figures ascending the ladders of Heaven, joining the angels and the holy.
With criticism for the excess of nudity and muscular bodies, Michelangelo made this painting transmitting the excitement and joy that the rapture brings, even in the heavenly and upper part. Surrounding Jesus, several angels and counselors were portrayed, interceding in humanity's favor, with a resemblance of a rotatory movement.
In the center of the work of art, we can see a muscular and powerful Jesus Christ, pronouncing his judgment. Made with the same conception as Apolo and Jupiter, he is portrayed without his beard, clearly inspired by the Last Judgment, especially the one in the comune of Pisa, doing a reference to the display of the wounds. In his left is the Virgin Mary, looking at the saved souls. On a similar scale, at the Virgin's side, is John the Baptist, and next to Christ is Saint Peter, with keys of the paradise in hand.
The rise and fall of human souls follow the traditional pattern, with the figures rising from the bottom left and being helped by the angels until the fresco's top. The condemned souls, falling from the right, are awaited by an angry and aggressive Charon, who transports the souls to hell according to classical mythology. He is supervised by Minos, drawn with great resemblance to Biagio da Cesena, one of the artists who had a feud with Michelangelo in the papal court.
