Evocation of Butterflies is an impressive 55.2 × 41.3 cm oil painting by Odilon Redon and belongs to the Detroit Institute of Art’s collection. The work was painted on a rectangular canvas and shows thirteen butterflies depicted against an orange background. The orange background varies from intense, bright orange to more muted, darker areas. The work was painted thickly, and among the butterflies and their wings, it’s possible to make out the texture of the paint.
Compared to Odilon Redon’s most famous pictures, his multicolored pastels and oil paintings presented spiritual themes. Evocation of Butterflies was painted with a somewhat restricted palette. The work was painted with orange, blue for some butterflies, yellow, purple, green, and white. All the butterflies in the picture seem to be flying in random directions as if Redon had just drawn them by observation. The painter was very interested in the writings of Charles Darwin, and his more naturalistic-bent side can be observed in works like this.
Odilon Redon was born in the rural region of France in 1840. He was part of an affluent family in the winemaking business in the Bordeaux region. He grew away from his parents, and the passage of time seemed increasingly slow for him. One of his days, talking with his father, he noticed how much he enjoyed watching the nebulous forms in the clouds taking different shapes and forms. This mutating quality and abstract, blurry forms would be ever-present in Redon’s work and be much characterized by it.
Redon had his breakthrough around the 1870s when he became associated with authors and poets. Interested in the writings of the Symbolists, Redon found plenty of material to work upon. His illustrations and lithograph albums became praised, and soon, he decided to work with oil paint as well. Redon progressively found a personal way to work with paint, using saturated colors with recurring color contrasts, expressive and more unrestrained use of color combination, and diffuse lighting. Most of Redon’s works shine with exciting and complex color use and detailed and captivating treatment.
