Red Boat with Blue Sails is a beautiful oil on canvas by Odilon Redon. Redon was an essential figure of late 19th-century art, being the most known Symbolist of his time. The artist, deeply inspired by Francisco Goya, sought to depict imaginary visions, images that resemble realms of our dreams and imaginaries. Firstly, Redon gained special recognition working with pure black and illustrating some texts through lithographic prints. Red Boat with Blue Sails belongs to the artist's later years of production when he had already adapted a colorful and tender manner.
Redon was born into an affluent family who administered a winemaking business. He was raised by his uncle and soon was showing a great interest in drawing. When Redon was fifteen years old, he began to study under Stanislas Gorin. Learning through Gorin's lectures, he was incentivized to study the works of Delacroix and Goya, both of whom had a substantial impact on the artist's mindset. He also learned about the upcoming Impressionists and their works with landscape.
In 1864, Redon became one of Gérôme's students. Their aesthetic ideals couldn't be more opposite, and the young artist eventually sought another environment for his artistic creations. During the following year, he returned to Bordeaux, where the Redon family was based. There, he had the support of a local artist. After this, the artist traveled to Paris, where he began to make his charcoal drawings and lithographs. Redon met the poet Stéphane Mallarmé, who became a close acquaintance, and his fame started to spread. His father died, and Redon created a series of lithographs to sustain himself financially.
Red Boat with Blue Sails is featured on a rectangular canvas and depicts a saturated red boat with intense colors in the center of the composition. Here, Odilon employed complementary color contrast, probably influenced by his friends of the Nabis: the sails are blueish-green, while the sea alternates from a very light blue to a warmer green. The picture is roughly divided in two by the horizon line. The sky was painted with light blue, and again using complementary contrasts, the clouds were done with bright yellow-orange pigments. Very subtly, Redon included small spots of pink, both in the clouds and sea.
