The Mysterious Boat is an incredible pastel drawing by the French artist Odilon Redon. The original piece belongs to a private collection and is dated 1892. Redon was an essential artist for Early Modernists: his bizarre creations, renditions of spiritual themes, surreal creatures, and monstrous beings, paired with both his masterful use of charcoal and colorful drawings with pastels, were understood as remarkably personal and free expressions. Redon was championed by the likes of Paul Gauguin during his life; and at the end of his career, the artist gained considerable praise. The Mysterious Boat is one of the many beautiful and delicate pastel drawings of the artist.
The Mysterious Boat was created on rectangular paper and belongs to the marine or seascape painting genre. As usual for Redon’s works with color, The Mysterious Boat is full of chromatic intensity. The sea, which occupies one-third of the picture, was rendered with green and white pastels, with spots of deep blue; and seems to rush with movement. The boat is located right at the image’s center, and a couple is sitting at its stern. The small ship was painted with an intense purple and its sail with a bright yellow. The background varies from dark-gray, white and yellow.
Odilon Redon was born in 1840. Early in his life, he noticed his interest in drawing; his will to become an artist was noticed and accepted by his parents. Stanislas Gorin, his first master, profoundly influenced Redon. Gorin always defended that Redon should seek his inner truths, and when the young man later had classes with Jean-Leon Gérôme, one of the most famous painters of the period, he felt immensely unmotivated. Gérôme was an Academician, and as such, couldn’t be further from Redon’s visionary work.
In the 1870s, Redon got close to the poet Stéphane Mallarmé. He was experimenting with lithographs and working inspired by literary pieces. In this association with writers, Redon got his breakthrough, and his work got the interest of a good deal of patrons. His later work with pastels, extremely colorful, was also deeply admired, and he sold many still lifes working with the medium. During the early 1900s, Redon was approached by part of the Nabis group, who saw his color use and spiritual subjects as an inspiration.
