FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
During the year of 1870, Cézanne started studying landscapes. Up to this point, he had had a more representational approach in painting scapes and nature. However, this is the point in his life where he began new experiments under the mentoring of Camille Pissarro. Pissarro had an idea of innovating the way artists should portray landscapes.
In this piece, the parts of the landscape and the spacial notion is defined by large sections of color. The road comes from the foreground, from the bottom right corner of the painting, where the pigments are darker and more saturated. Then, the road proceeds to the middle of the canvas, where the broad brushstrokes gain a lighter color. The road curves towards the middle of the canvas, to the right, and fades away behind some vegetation in front of the houses. The road is accompanied by patches of dark green grass. Despite the green aspect of the grass, when looking closely, it's possible to see brushstrokes of varied colors.
On the left-hand side of the painting, there is another patch of grass, and behind that, a brown fence. The fence is also represented by a block of brown color in vertical brush strokes, creating the idea of slats.
There are a few trees with thin and tall trunks in the middle of the grass patches. Behind the road, there are a bunch of houses, which are all white and light-colored, but the color palette on the rooftops varies. Some are more yellow, while some are brick red. There is a blue rooftop on the right-hand side corner of the painting, and that block of color stands out, being the one cool shade on a warm palette.
The sky is represented with light shades of purple, blue and yellow, and filled with heavy strokes, creating the idea of a very cloudy yet bright sky.
If we look at the landscape, it is not a classical representation. At the same time, it gives the viewer an odd feeling that things are out of place, and it is also hard to precisely appoint what could be different. The ability to create this intriguing and particular point of view was possibly among the most important teachings that Cézanne achieved from his mentor Pissarro.
