Aix-en-Provence, the small village north of Marseille, became the subject matter of a number of Cézanne’s paintings and studies. With these paintings, he created and popularized the trademark aesthetic of France’s countryside. Soon, this style was popularized around the world and became a characteristic of the late Impressionists. Mont Sainte Victoire was the protagonist of a few of Cézanne’s works, and some other painters represented the majestic mountain too.
Cézanne had an interesting journey as an artist, and it’s possible to make a timeline of his development. This piece is often mentioned as one of the peaks and one of the most important artworks of the Impressionist movement.
It shows a field with some farmland patches on the bottom, and the incredible Mont Sainte Victoire behind, over the horizon line. On the left, in the first plane of the composition, there is a tree from which a branch comes out and frames the entire painting.
The fields are painted in several tones of green and are divided into squared areas. There are some trees and bushes and also some structures in the middle of this field. There is one noticeable structure on the left-hand side, just by the side of the tree trunk. Other smaller houses are spread all over the field and up the foot of the mountain.
The rocky mountain was painted in subtle tones of blue, lilac and orange. There are shades and tones that create the idea of volume and shape all over the mountain. It’s a gorgeous and delicate work of small patches of color.
The tree on the foreground has a dark brown trunk. This trunk is shaded lightly with a blue color very similar to the one picked for the sky. The branch creates a very interesting and unique movement with the mountain tops, communicating within each other.
Leaves are coming out of the branch, and are all represented with delicate yet very well defined diagonal brush strokes. The way the artist chose to use his brush here not only defines the foliage itself but also creates texture and weight.
The palette is very subtle, and most of the painting is dominated by these beautiful tones of bright blue and green. Yet, some small details stand out like the dark trunk and the yellow structure on the back.
