Cézanne is one of the most influential artists of both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism movements. His career created a bridge between the late 19th century artists and the early 20th century movements. He was rigorous with his studies, and there are several collections of some of his chosen subject matter. The card players' theme is one of the most famous examples of that. The artist produced five famous pieces with the same motif and a few more studies.
This painting shows a curvy road in the countryside of France. Provence and the France dirt roads were definitely among Cézanne's favorite topics. He produced some works showing roads, houses, and villages across the country. Some were more intimate, as the artist had a closer relationship with the place. Others are vaguer and less descriptive of a particular place.
This piece shows a dirt road in the middle of the painting. The muddy road is covered in a light shade of soil. The thick painting evokes an idea of muddy, wet muck. On the left-hand side, it's possible to see a little ridge composed of earthy soil. On the right-hand side, there is a large hill that goes off-panel, creating the idea that we are looking at the foot of a proper hill. This hill is covered in dark green vegetation, and some orange leaves on the bushes. There are also some light grey rocks within the vegetation.
On the second plane, we can see just a little bit of a grassy field. There are some rocks on top of it and another dark hill coming up to the right-hand side.
On the background, above the horizon line, there is a vivid warm green mountain that covers nearly the entire environment. On top of it, there is a bright, beautiful sky painted with a consistent tone of sky blue.
Paintings in this manner helped create an aesthetics that defined the style of Provence. Cézanne, concerning his relationship with the place, did a wonderful job of representing the style of the architecture and the landscapes.
The whole palette in this painting is warm and earthy, it even looks a bit faded, as if we were looking at the landscape at the end of the afternoon of a sunny day.
