Paul-Elie Ranson's Apple Tree With Red Fruit is a remarkable work of Post-Impressionist painting by a truly idiosyncratic and undervalued figure who was working at the transition point between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Studying at the Académie Julian, a now-defunct art school in Paris which was the only to accept women students, Ranson met fellow artists who he would join with to create the distinctive and often-esoteric Nabis group. Meeting at Ranson's studio on the Boulevarde du Montparnasse each Saturday, he injected the twentieth century with the eccentricity that would pervade European modernism following his death in 1909. Enthusiastically passionate about spiritualism, Ranson studied the major theological works of western and eastern religious philosophy. A firm believer in the intrinsically human urge towards symbols, Ranson prefigured many of the dominant themes of the Surrealist, Dadaist, and experimental avant gardes.
Retrospectively, Ranson was a seminal influence, setting the tone for the more daring fringes of French art in the 1890s. Fascinated by the extremes of contemporary art and the diversity of world literature, Ranson's work would pave the way for the revolution of non-representational and abstract painting. Apple Tree With Red Fruit is a stunning visual reproduction of the transition between the Post-Impressionism of Cezanne as the more vivid departures of Fauvism and Cubism. Along with the Nabis group, Ranson preached the integration of art and life and despite his radical ideas much of his work reflected the design-inspired, flatness and spatially constrained styles of Cezanne and Gauguin. Apple Tree With Red Fruit is therefore a stylistic experiment in iconoclasm, situated at the juncture between the seismic changes that would soon occur in European art. Ranson's Post-Impressionist reproduction of this simple landscape scene is proof that the big trailblazing names in art history did indeed have precedents.
