After the initial elation and novelty caused by the new and exotic life he met in Tahiti started to wear off, Paul Gauguin began focusing on portraying life in the islands as he understood and felt it. Resulting from that, he would produce some paintings which made explicit the cultural contrasts between France and Polynesia. That is to say that Gauguin portrayed mainly what shocked his inner French prejudices and morals, as part of his process to internalize the new culture, thus releasing him from what he believed to be the firm grasp of Western decadence over the artistic profession.
Part of that effort was this oil on canvas, finished in 1892 and now in possession of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, in Moscow, Russia. A watercolor study of the same piece was also released two years later and is currently in a show at the Art Institute Chicago. In this piece, Gauguin explores the intimate life of the islanders, portraying a candid moment between two Tahitian women, who he claimed were sisters, lounging in the nude on the sand of the beach in poses he compared to the voluptuous grace of resting beasts.
According to the artist, he had observed the pair of sisters resting after having a nice bath and heard them talking about their sexual exploits on the night before, as well as about the exploits they hoped and planned to have in the future. At some point, one of them would have asked the other if she was jealous, a phrase which Gauguin would transcribe phonetically onto the bottom left of the canvas. What surprised the artist the most was that the jealousy mentioned was not about possessiveness or a threat to an exclusive love affair, but more of a matter of one sister feeling that her sibling had had better or more numerous encounters.
In that way, Gauguin expresses here is that in that tropical paradise he had found in Tahiti, sexual encounters were met not with the seriousness and pomp that they carried in 18th century Europe, but with a spirit of playfulness and freedom. That aspect is reinforced by his choice of color palette, painting the scene with warm hues that evoke not only the fraternal love shared at that moment but also the idea that sexuality hangs in the Tahitian air, painting the world in pink, so to say.
