Finished in 1891, this oil on canvas is considered to have been the first important painting created by the artist during his first stay in Tahiti. It was first shown in 1893 in a show of Gauguin’s recent work at the Durand-Ruel gallery, where it was presented along with a flowery description by the writer and poet Charles Morice, a friend of the artist with whom he had exchanged letters about the painting beforehand. The piece is now being shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York.
It portrays one of the most recognizable biblical scenes, where Mary has the Baby Jesus in her lap, being attended on by worshippers, observed by an angel. But the scene is not rendered in a manner that would be immediately intelligible to Gauguin’s contemporary audience, as the composition is the result of the cultural hybridity that would become one of the artist’s staples.
In this instance, the artist offers us a blend of his many artistic influences, which he took around with him in the form of pictures and objects, forming somewhat of an imaginary museum, including, for example, a collection of pictures of the Javanese medieval carvings on the Borobudur Temple Compound, on which he based many of the poses used in his work, including those of the two praying women and the angel.
The Virgin Mary's pose, carrying the Baby Jesus on her shoulder, who has his head gently resting upon hers, is supposed to have been taken from a picture of an Egyptian mother with her son, purchased in Port-Said, which was also used for inspiration by other artists. To those, Gauguin added his impressions of the island and its people, producing a composition of unique grace and lightness, even though the color palette employed relies heavily on sharp contrasts and solid fields of color.
The product of that conglomeration of influences is a piece of work that translates the artist’s very first impressions upon his arrival in Tahiti, showing what he believed to be a rather simple and innocent people having their culture amalgamated to Western religion. In a way, it is Gauguin’s first embrace of Tahiti, in which he demonstrates that he has been taking in all the color, nature, and the people and rendering it in his new Post-Impressionist art style.
