FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

Between his two Tahitian periods, Paul Gauguin seems to have rediscovered an interest in France, portraying its more ordinary facets with an entirely new attitude. During a couple of years between 1893 and 1895, the artist divided his artistic production between continuing his work on portraying the tropical paradise he had just returned from, at least as he saw it, and portraying more popular figures of the French cultural and social landscape. He even went back to Pont-Aven, the artists’ colony where he had spent some of his most productive years before leaving for Haiti for the first time, and where he had met many of the greats of his time.
Produced in all likelihood during said travel to Brittany, this oil on canvas, which is now in possession of private collectors, portrays just one such popular figures, in the shape of an eponymous guitarist performing his craft. The musician is presented without much context, and as such one is led to pay close attention to the character which dominates the center of the composition. What little background is offered implies that the music player is on a rounded stage of some sort, in a rather well-lit place, even though the yellowness of the room might indicate that the source of light is of an artificial nature.
As to the musician himself, he seems intensely focused on the task at hand, paying no attention to the artist portraying him, and the shape of his mouth indicates that he whistles along with the tune. His skin is brown, possibly indicating a Moorish or Mediterranean descent, and his feet are bare, which tells the observer that the man is either very comfortable or destitute, although the context does little to nothing to help understand which one it is.
Lastly, his extremities are somewhat exaggerated in size, which might have been Gauguin’s way of portraying his focus of attention when observing the man, where the hands and feet mark the rhythm of the song. As such, the artist transmits through deformation in proportions his feelings when watching the scene he portrays, attempting to bring his audience to the moment of contact between the artist and the subject matter in an almost intimate look at the artist’s mind. Truly a magnificent specimen of Gauguin’s Cloisonnist style.
