Roses or The Artist's Wife in the Garden at Skagen is a 67.5 by 76.5 centimeters (26.6 in × 30.1 in) breathtaking oil on canvas by Peder Severin Kroyer. The original painting was done in 1893. Peder Severin Kroyer was one of the leading early Modern European painters. Born in the latter half of the 19th century, Kroyer displayed skills in draftsmanship since his infancy. Graduating from the distinguished Royal Danish Academy of Art, Kroyer moved to Paris soon after, where he got in contact with the work of Modern painters and was highly influenced by them. Roses or The Artist's Wife was one of the artist's most celebrated pieces.
The setting of the painting is Skagen, where the Kroyer family frequently rented a house. Skagen was a small fishermen's village where a group of artists started to gather in the late 1870s and would depict beach scenes, their family gatherings, and the life of fishermen. The first time that Kroyer went there was in 1882, and he returned yearly. Finally, after his marriage to his wife Marie, they settled there permanently.
Before arriving at Roses or The Artist's Wife in the Garden at Skagen, Kroyer made many sketches, other versions, and even photo preparations for this picture. The painting is one of Kroyer's most accomplished pieces: it shows an extremely detailed depiction of a garden on a sunny day. One of the painting subjects is on the picture's left side: Marie, Peder Severin Kroyer's wife. She seems to be taking a nap since her head is hanging low and her eyes are closed.
Marie Kroyer is sitting on a beach chair, and there is an empty one to her left side. Also, near her, there is a dog, sleeping as well, mirroring her behavior. Marie's white vestments are contrasted against the deep green background behind her. The other protagonist of the work, the roses, appear expansively: they start from the picture's forefront and grow until the painting's top, occupying a considerable part of the composition with its beautiful white roses. The picture was done with impressive and well-thought lighting points, creating different areas of contrast and temperature and making it a very dynamic composition.
