This fantastic painting measures 286.0 cm × 224.0 cm. Its monumental size shows the moment where the angel Lucifer rebelled against his father, God, and fell from heaven, taking alongside with him a group of angels that backed his rebellion. The vertical painting shows a crowd of bodies coming down from heaven and falling into hell.
Unlike the medieval portrayal of evil, where Satan would be represented in monstrous forms, wings, tails, and deformed bodies, the Renaissance representation of the Devil himself is a shape of Satyr with horns and hoofs - a reference to paganism. Rubens searches for this reference to represent Satan. Yet, he resorts to the bat-like monstrous creatures to represent the other devils and evil itself.
This painting is as big as it is impressive. The vertical layout is tinted with a warm earthy palette. The dark surroundings are brightened by a hole in the clouds, from where beams of light shine towards hell. Rubens usually portrays biblical passages in colorful palettes, but this painting not only has a limited brown palette but also has a much more intense and disturbing atmosphere. It the space between the clouds, it’s possible to see a little bit of a blue sky, that is engulfed by the dark shapes of the clouds and the falling bodies.
On top of the clouds, banishing the evil crowd is Archangel Michael. He wears red and blue robes that are represented with a more saturated tone of red, and he holds a shiny shield that reflects the light that is coming from above. From where Archangel Michael stands, there is a strong source of yellow light. The painting gets darker and darker towards the bottom, an area paved by confusing forms of suffering and damnation. It’s possible to see snakes, lions, deformed animals, some monstrous shapes and parts of human bodies. At points, it’s difficult to say if the figures are being attacked by these monstrous creatures or if they are blending with them and becoming atrocious chimeras.
The mass of bodies that fall from heaven shows a mix between humanized bodies, with pale skin, monsters and animals. The human figures show expressions of suffering and anguish. There are also demon creatures with bat wings, grey bodies, and animal faces, which pull people down, bite and attack them.
