Peter Paul Rubens is known as one of the most prominent Baroque painters, inspiration and master to great names like Van Dyke, among others. The Flemish painter lived most of his life between Italy and Antwerp. Most of his pieces are intense and dramatic, and he has been known worldwide for his work on the human form. He would draw bodies with sensual curvy shapes, enhance the movement and tragedy of his narratives.
He has a broad body of work, ranging from mythical stories to historical figures. He also painted several portraits of noblemen, which was the most common path for authors from his time to become famous and known. Among the relevant portraits, Rubens once painted Marie de Médicis. Astonished by Rubens' amazing work depicting his mother, the then King Louis XIII ordered a commission as a gift for his wife, Anne of Austria.
The brilliant portrait is meticulously executed. It has an incredible amount of details and ornaments. The ¾ portrait shows Anne sitting on a wooden chair in front of a thick red curtain. Behind this curtain, it's possible to see details of the extravagant room. The architecture shows a golden room ornamented with Greek columns, heavily detailed friezes, and bulging arches. This creates an interesting color pallet onto which the figure of the Queen of France is painted wearing a shiny black dress.
Her golden locks are ornamented with a large tiara embedded with large round shiny stones. Her hair is curly and frames her pale face. She has a stern, but soft facial expression and her black eyes stand out from the whiteness of her skin.
The ruff collar is quite unique. The translucent layers of fabric suggest a thin and delicate material. Her cleavage shows part of her pale white chest and is ornamented with a dark flower and a hanging piece of jewelry. The dress has thick sleeves that end with a graceful fabric, similar to the collar. The dress is sewn with black material, but the chest and the frontal section are made of a heavily ornamented dark blue component. It is all stitched in golden thread, creating a gorgeous pattern. Over the ensemble, there are several pearls punctuating the edges and details of the dress.
She is holding a delicate small bouquet of rosé, white and yellow flowers on her right hand.
