FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
The Portrait of Marchesa Brigida Spinola Doria was completed in 1606 when the Marchesa was turning 22 years old. It was reduced times several times, to the point that a garden that was shown on the background doesn't exist anymore. Currently, the portrait has 152 cm by 98 cm.
The chosen pose, the outfit, and even the architectural details on the back express Marchesa's wealth and affluence. She is posing in the middle of the layout. The gaze in her eyes expresses how the painting was produced with the objective of being hung up high upon the wall. Rubens works with light and a limited palette of vivid colors in this piece.
Looking at it, the first thing that stands out is the opulent silver outfit. The dress, all produced in heavy goods, shines with its elegant silver fabric. The corset is tied around her waist and opens itself in large voluminous sleeves. The details on the whole pattern are golden. The bracers on the dress are tied, creating a gorgeous form, and they finish in a puffy furry detail around her wrists. It's possible to see a bit of golden fabric coming out of the sleeves, just as the inside of the same piece of cloth.
The abundant skirt comes out of the coset, and also has some golden details embroidered in it. The folds and creases on the skirt show the thickness and richness of the fabric.
Her head emerges from the also silver and heavily intricate raff. She has pale skin with rosy cheeks, red lipstick, and beautiful dark eyes. Her light nutbrown hair is very curly on top of her head, and she wears a barely visible earring that is overshadowed by the raff and the headpiece.
Behind her, we can see a little bit of the background. There are two heavy square columns covered in marble and wood. There are also some red bricks way on the back. Everything is luxurious and ornamented. Right behind her, a part of the wall, possibly a column, is covered by a red draped piece of cloth, which reflects the light and is quite vibrant, contrasting with the silver outfit and highlighting it.
