This incredible altarpiece was produced over the year of 1626 for the Cathedral of Our Lady, in Antwerp. The five meters high piece is a dramatic portrayal of Our Lady ascending to heavens surrounded by peasants, apostles, and little angels.
The dynamic and emotional piece shows Our Lady in the center, her long hair is golden, wavy, and uncovered, unlike most portraits. She is ascending towards a bright yellow light that comes from heaven while wearing a blue and white silk robe and a golden veil. The veil detached from her head in movement as is waving around her, almost like a Holy halo.
This painting has an interesting layout because the arched top helps create the idea of movement while the characters on the ground form a more stagnant mass of bodies. The twelve apostles are gathered around her tomb, each having a different reaction to the moment. Some are looking inside the tomb, some have their arms up in awe, and others are reaching and trying to touch her.
The painting is divided diagonally. The left part is immensely bright and vivid, while the right part looks darker, and is a mixture of pieces of cloth and wings in the background. Still, the color palette is relatively uniform, and there is some contrast. The whole piece has samples of vivid bright, beautiful colors contrasting with pale tones of clothes and skin. The palette is warm, despite the blue sky that is the background for this occasion. Most of the robes have vivid red and yellow details, as there is sunlight shining from above, and the whole ensemble looks warm and joyous.
The composition is deep and complex, and there are many characters with refined details. For instance, the bottom part of Our Lady’s robes is completely covered in flowery details and ornaments. The characters not only have individual facial expressions, but each one of them also interacts with Our Lady with their own particular reactions. This, along with the intensity and drama of the curves and movements, turns this into a really unique artwork.
