The famous painting The Four Philosophers, created over the years of 1611 and 1612, brings a lot of meaning and context into it. Rubens completed it on his brother’s and Justus Lipsius’ passing as a way to mourn and celebrate their lives.
In this work, four people are Justus Lipsius. The first one left to right is a self-portrait of the artist, standing up, wearing pitch-black clothes, with curly golden hair and beard. The second man, sitting at the table holding a pen with thick brown hair and beard is Phillip Rubens, his deceased brother. He also wears black clothes with a white Tudor neck ruff. He has a thoughtful expression and is looking outside the panel, to his right-hand side, as if we were paying attention to something or someone outside the canvas.
The next man, to his right by the viewer’s perspective, is the also deceased Justus Lipsius. On a smaller and more discreet Tudor neck, he wears an animal print vest over his black clothing. He looks ahead with brown, piercing eyes. His hair is brown, as well as his beard. He points at something on an opened book on top of the table standing in front of them.
The last man, on the far right-hand side, is Joannes Woverius. He is wearing black clothes with a white collar. His skin is pale, and his hair and beard are golden.
They are all sitting around a table covered in books and a beautiful ornamented drapery piece. Behind them, there is a marble column, and a panel painted on the wall. These details on the back are framed by a red piece of curtain. On top of them, on the right-hand side, there is a bust of Seneca, a personal object from Rubens, with some tulips decorating it. On top of the table there thick old books.
This painting is mostly painted in warm tones of red and yellow, creating a warm and cozy environment. The darkness on the men’s garments helps create more contrast, a characteristic that is not very present on most of Rubens’ pieces. Also, when compared with other of Rubens’ most famous pieces, this artwork lacks movement. The man is standing still, very balanced and steady in inertia, evoking a more calm and philosophical image.
