Cartoonesque, brimming with personality, and more than a little unsettling, Philipp Otto Runge's 1806 painting Peter Walks on Water is a unique document of an artist whose trailblazing innovations were cruelly cut short. Runge, a devout Christian and borderline mystic, desired only to reflect on canvas the majesty and the harmony he saw in nature. Turning to the science of colour, chromatics, to express his philosophies about the universe, Runge equated the colors red, blue, and yellow with the holy trinity of the Christian faith. Dedicating his short career to achieving a reproduction and synthesis of many art forms into what the Romantic artists of his day named 'the total work of art', Peter Walks on Water is a fine example of this truly experimental painter juggling with forms, expressions, and mediums. Peter Walks on Water is an imagined reproduction of a scene from the Bible in which Jesus, while with his disciples on a boat, walks on water and encourages the doubting Peter to do the same. A defiant statement of intent both in harmony with, and breaking the rules of nature, Runge's canvas in a manifesto on canvas.
In achieving this fusion of art forms, the German Romantic painters of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries were in close communication. Presenting his findings to the polymath and seminal figure Goethe, Runge stated his aim to compile, document, and decrypt the complete spectrum of colour that resulted from the mixture of his 'holy trinity'. However, his studies were interrupted by the ravages of the Napoleonic wars which closely impinged on the young artist's life the year that Peter Walks on Water was painted. With the Siege of Hamburg continuing to rage Runge could not dedicate himself to his color studies until 1808, just two years before his premature death
