The Assumption of the Virgin, c.1656

The Assumption of the Virgin is a stunning oil on canvas by Philippe de Champaigne. The masterpiece was painted in 1656, and its diameter is 193 cm (75.9 in). It is now part of the Musée de Beaux-Arts de Marseille. Philippe de Champaigne was a painter of the Baroque period associated with Classicism. Peter Paul Rubens and Nicolas Poussin influenced his work. His work is known for its impacting austerity, vibrant colors, but rigid and well-elaborated compositions. The Assumption of the Virgin is a stellar work that sums up perfectly how he approached the religious subject.

The artwork was painted in an enormous oval-shaped medium. The subject and its treatment are familiar to the Baroque painters: the Virgin, along with numerous floating cherubs. Another Baroque painter, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, also extensively painted this subject. On Philippe de Champaigne’s approach, the audience witnesses a blonde Virgin Mary, her hair floating in the air with her left arm opened and looking up. She is wearing a long pink tunic along with an intensely blue cape. The blue color was known for being used by Champaigne in a very singular way, usually being the most seducing color of his palette.

Virgin Mary rests against a golden background, mostly appearing in the circle’s upper portion. This makes the impression that heavenly light is falling upon her from above, sent by God. It also strengthens the contrast between the deep blue of her clothing while harmonizing with her pink dress. Also filling the background, there are light grey clouds. Some of the angels seem to be blending with them since, in some cases, only their heads appear. Beneath Virgin Mary, two angels are holding the clouds, as if they were helping with her ascension and sustaining her weight.

Another angel acts on a similar function beneath her long blue cape while staring at the Virgin. Not only as important religious figures, but the angels also serve as visual elements in creating an exciting and dynamic composition. Except for the ones at the top, which are only floating heads, most angels also carry a piece of fabric. One of them is light yellow, the other pink and finally green. The semi-circle position of the angels creates a visually exciting relationship with the medium’s circular shape, allowing the viewer’s eye to roam freely and circularly through the painting.

Purchasing a Stretching Service

If you are planning to frame your painting yourself, use an existing frame, or frame it locally, you may choose to order your painting with a stretching service, meaning that it will arrive mounted on wooden bars.

Purchasing a Gallery Wrap

If you're considering not framing your painting at all, you may opt for a Gallery Wrap. The term Gallery Wrap refers to the way the canvas is stretched, which is by wrapping it around thick stretcher bars, about 1.5 inch thick, with the canvas being secured to the back rather than the sides of those bars.

All orders ship with UPS, FedEx or DHL and will arrive directly to your home or office. A tracking number will be emailed to you as soon as the order leaves our studio so you can track it online. All orders ship express and usually arrive within 4-5 days from the shipping date. Due to shipping restraints, many of our framed, stretched, and oversize paintings may take 6-21 days for arrival depending on the safest route determined by the postal service.
