Pierre Auguste Renoir painted Judgement of Paris during the final stage of his career, beginning the painting in 1913 and finishing it a year later. As an Impressionist, the mythological subject depicted was not something common in the modern painter’s work. Judgement of Paris portrays the story of Paris, a shepherd-prince, and his duty to choose one of the goddesses as the most beautiful, handing her a golden apple. In the painting, Renoir depicts Minerva, Venus, and Juno.
The three nude and voluptuous women offer Paris many bribes in exchange for the golden apple, but he eventually chooses Venus and her offer of marrying him to the fairest woman of the mortal world. This woman was Helen of Troy and, according to the myth, because of her new marriage with Paris, the Trojan and Greek army began a terrible war. Modern artists, like the Impressionists, would generally divert from Classic subjects – like mythological stories – as they were often rejected by the Paris Salon.
Although this painting is a portrayal of Greek mythology, Renoir captured many aesthetic influences from the Japanese art. These exotic woodcut prints brought vibrant colors and unusual compositions, a direct opposition from the standards of the Classic Academies. The passion for nature was apparent in the art of the Japanese, something that leads Impressionists to share the same love, as they preferred working en plein air, meaning they painted outdoors. Renoir chose to represent this Classical scene with his Impressionistic style.
In Judgement of Paris, the artist placed all five figures in the forefront of the composition. The three nude goddesses stand next to each other, with Venus in the middle reaching her hand out to grasp the apple. The goddess on the left holds a white fabric partially covering her body, while the woman on the right faces her back to the viewer and holds a red cloth. Paris is on his knees, wearing a golden robe and hat. There is an angel-like figure floating in the top left corner of the canvas, observing the scene. The landscape was painted in a very Impressionistic manner, with dark shades of brown and green on the ground and the trees in the background. Renoir inserts some specks of yellow and white, representing flowers on the floor.
