Pierre Auguste Renoir began painting Two Girls Reading in 1890 and concluded the artwork in 1891. This was an ongoing subject for Renoir, for in many occasions he portrayed women reading, like in The Reader (Young Woman Reading a Book), Two Girls Reading in a Garden, and Camille Monet Reading. The modern painter took an unexpected direction in the 1880s, as he decided to turn away from the Impressionist movement, even though he was one of the primary founders. Renoir pondered if this modern way of painting was the right path for him to take, and after traveling to Algeria, he decided to dedicate himself to a more traditional way of working.
After a trip to Italy, Renoir was deeply inspired by the artists of the Renaissance and began studying extensively. His focus shifted from working with expressive brush strokes to great precision in portraying forms, volume, and composition. After about a decade of going against the Impressionism, Renoir decided to return to his original style of painting. The painter retrieved his Impressionistic traits and joined them with the knowledge he gained during his years of traveling and studying. In the oil painting Two Girls Reading, it is possible to observe how the painter assimilated his expertise of Classic techniques and his modern take on it.
Renoir positioned one of the girls in a side view, looking down at the book in her lap, which she holds with both hands. She has long blond hair, tied with a pink bow, and wears a white dress with small flowers and puffy sleeves. Her hat matches her outfit, and the same pink ribbon is seen repeated in her ensemble. At her side, another girl looks down at the book, facing the viewer. She also wears a fashionable dress with a matching yellow-brown hat. With a smile on her face, she rests her head on her hand while putting her elbow on her knees.
The background is loosely painted with shades of green and brown, showing that this scene was probably taken place in nature. Renoir beautifully captured an intimate view of two high-class girls enjoying a book together, as he used a natural and soft color palette. The artist also gave great detail to the atmosphere and the feeling transmitted by the female figures, like in many of his artwork.
