Pierre Auguste Renoir concluded the oil painting called Young Woman in a Boat, also known as Lise Trehot in 1870. The painter was in his late twenties when he completed this artwork, and this period represents his burst of creative talent. The model Lise Trehot was also portrayed in the exotic painting Odalisque (An Algerian woman), inspired by the Orientalism. In 1867, Renoir also depicted Lise in the masterpiece entitled Diana, representing the Goddess of the hunt.
Young Woman in a Boat is a landscape painting with an exquisite Impressionistic aesthetic. With loose and expressive brush strokes, Renoir gives a romantic and lonely feeling to the scene. Young Lise sits on a docked boat, looking out into the distance. She is almost centered on the canvas, and the composition leads the viewer’s eyes from the central figure to the details in the forefront, and lastly, to the background. The boat is positioned diagonally to the canvas, and the wooden stakes that stick out of the water are perfectly straight, forming a ninety-degree angle with the horizon.
The forefront depicts the shore with yellow and ochre-colored ground – the shadows are painted in brown and purple. The left side of the canvas is the darkest, with large trees and vegetation. Lise’s white clothing is painted in a simple manner, with swift strikes of thin black brush strokes to define some outlines. The water begins with tonalities of blue and violet, while in the background, Renoir used ochre and yellow as a complementary combination. The far background holds the same colors – violet-blue sky, ochre, yellow, and brown shore, as well as the green vegetation.
As an Impressionist, Renoir was passionate about the Japanese art coming to Europe. These artworks were done in the technique of Ukiyo-e, similar to the traditional woodcut prints, but done with watercolor. These prints portrayed exuberant landscapes, blossoming trees, enormous lakes, and faraway mountaintops. This was a factor that influenced them to work en plein air, meaning they worked outside to capture the optical effects of sunlight, and to experience the surrounding nature. This particular subject depicted in Young Woman in a Boat, was common in many Japanese prints, as they would also portray female figures boating, in various woodcuts.
