Pieter the Elder Bruegel's 1565 canvas The Hunters in the Snow (Winter) is a masterful manifestation of the Northern Renaissance and a startling depiction of the occupations and celebrations of a small Flemish village. After moving to Brussels in 1563, Brueghel started work on a cycle of landscape reproductions of the seasons, and the work enacted in the shifting climates. Hunters in the Snow is the winter incarnation of the series and was by all accounts commissioned by the wealthy tradesman Nicholas Jongelinck who bequeathed it to his hometown of Antwerp the year following its completion. Exploring the lifestyle of country workers, Brueghel's skilful reproduction of a frosty vista depicts villagers both in toil and in leisure, yet working together and at ease in their shared terrain. With a clear influence from the illustrations that littered late medieval chronicles, Brueghel manages to humanise his subjects, avoiding the temptation to depict them as stereotypical peasants or royal subjects. With a staggering humanism the artist liberates his subjects through work and play.
Brueghel depicts with remarkable precision and simplicity the exhaustion of the hunters and the burden of the minuscule figure carrying a bundle of sticks. One can also feel the ascending changes in tone that shifts from the exhausted figures in the foreground to the leisurely villagers skating below. Letting the gaze of the viewer fall naturally over the downward descent of the natural lands, the artist litters his terrain with figures frolicking utterly at one with their landscape. This majestic canvas is an embodiment of the continued reliance of a rapidly modernising continent on the rural realities of the natural topography. Yet, Brueghel's The Hunters in the Snow (Winter) has his figures gliding precariously across thin ice; depicting them as joyous individuals balanced, both figuratively and literally on an unstable and seasonal surface.
