The Peasant Dance is a stunning 114 x 164 cm( 44.8 x 64.5 in) oil painting by Pieter the Elder Bruegel. The original artwork is dated 1568 and belongs to the Kunsthistorisches Museum’s collection. Pieter Bruegel was a highly creative engraver and painter from the 16th-century Netherlands. His work is often compared to Hieronymus Bosch, but despite his more religious inclined work, Bruegel focused extensively on daily life scenes, also known as genre painting.
Bruegel’s images of peasantry life provoke many different interpretations, such as being either critic or celebratory, life-affirming, or judging the sins and excesses of the people. Either way, Bruegel was a singular name in Flemish art and helped to pave the way for later painters such as Rembrandt and Rubens. The Peasant Dance depicts the festivities of the peasants, being one of Bruegel’s masterpieces.
The Peasant Dance is an oil on panel. The work belongs to his late phase, created a few years before his passing. The Peasant Dance is of the exact dimensions as The Peasant Wedding, and the pictures were probably made as companion pieces. Both of these works are exemplary of Bruegel’s distinctive approach to genre painting. An older couple walks in from the composition’s right towards the picture’s center. They are dancing along with a group of people: further away, four other people can be seen dancing and holding hands.
The left side of the composition is full of details. Close to the audience, two small figures talk with each other. One of them seems to be a child, the other one a tiny woman. To their right, two men are sitting side by side, drinking and chatting. The one with white articles of clothing is playing the bagpipe, while the other holds a jug and has a blushed face. Behind them, there is a dark brown table. Three very drunk men talk to each other making expansive gestures. Behind them, a couple is kissing passionately.
The scenery is a small Flemish village. On the upper-right section of the work, Bruegel painted a bright white sky, some brown houses, and a church, positioned on the vanishing point. Earthy colors dominate the artwork, and Bruegel puts color intensity in their clothing with green, red, and light yellow colors. The work has his striking humor, enormous attention to detail, and a captivating uniqueness in treatment.
