Pieter the Elder Bruegel's 1565 canvas Winter Landscape with Skaters and Bird Trap, is a masterpiece of the Northern Renaissance and a moving evocation of the labours and pleasures of a tiny Flemish town. In 1563 the artist had settled in Brussels where he began work on a series of figurative reproductions of landscape scenes entitled the Labours of the Months. Exploring the lifestyles of rural peasants, Brueghel's masterful rendering of a winter scene captures individuals at work and at play, each cooperating with each other in their shared habitat. Taking influence from the illuminated illustrations of fifteenth and sixteenth century chronicles, Brueghel however shuns the tendency to depict people as 'types', liberating his nameless subjects through both labour and joy. Painted the same year as his The Hunters in the Snow (Winter), which portrays a similar scene, Brueghel may be referencing the severe winter of 1564-65 or evoking a deeper allegorical meaning evolving precariousness and entrapment. Indeed, bird-traps often symbolized those set by the devil to ensnare awaiting souls.
Appearing more interested in capturing figurative reproductions of his subjects in movement, Brueghel portrays with remarkable clarity and simplicity the gliding carelessness of the skaters. One can also feel the elevated shifts in tone that moves from the focal point on the hilltop down to the revelling figures skating on the ice. Leading the eye of the viewer across the diagonal terrain of the flowing topography, Brueghel scatters his figures across the landscape as if it would be bare without them. Yet, acknowledging the powerful influence and reliance of sixteenth-century Europeans on the natural world, Brueghel's allegorical reproduction of a winter scene has his subjects literally skating on thin ice; joyous individuals balanced precariously on a surface that will soon melt with the changing seasons.
