Hamsa Damayanthi is a beautiful oil painting by the Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma, regarded as one of the country's foremost painters, especially by popularizing his artworks using lithography. The artwork depicts a moment in the love story between Damayanti and King Nala, who fell in love without meeting in person but by learning about each other through Hamsa, the swan. The story can be found in the Vana Parva or The Book of The Forest of the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata.
In the chronicle, King Nala, ruler of Nishada, said to be one of the most handsome men of his time, catches a swan roaming the palace's hunting grounds. The bird is the mythological Hamsa, the swan, which begs the King to free him and tells him high praises about the fairness of Damayanti, princess of Vidarbha. Hamsa argues that if Nala releases him, he would go to Damayanti and sing her praises about him as well. The King, already enamored, sets the bird out to its quest.
Raja Ravi Varma's artwork depicts Hamsa speaking to the Damayanti, who seems attentive and captivated by its words. She immediately falls in love with King Nala, with whom she later married and had two children. The painting is a beautiful example of Varma's ability to create beautiful pictures allying Western Academic aesthetic with traditional Indian iconography.
It also displays an interesting combination of compositional counterpoints. For example, the columns, rendered in a light ochre, are opposed to each other, one in the upper-left and the other in the picture's lower-right sections. The blue sky and water counterbalance each other, the intense white swan's feathers on the right with the marble floor on the lowers left, and the soft pink water flowers with the figure's blouse. Indeed, all these elements contribute to a harmonically balanced composition.
Varma concentrated the two red elements in the center of the composition. While the wall was painted with a subdued tone, Damayanti's garment is rendered with the most luxurious and vibrant red, invariably catching the viewer's eye and making her the painting's primary focus. Indeed, Damayanti's figure carries an impressive richness of detail, from the golden elements of her clothing, to her intricate matching jewels from head to toe.
