The Milkmaid is an incredible oil on canvas by the Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma. The original artwork was painted in 1904 and now belongs to the Sree Chitra Art Gallery in Kerala, India. Raja Ravi Varma is among the most important Indian painters. His work was not only welcomed into high-culture institutions as well as popularized through lithography prints. Working with Hindu deities, Ravi Varma created many famous depictions of that pantheon. In addition, his work incorporated Victorian Era painting visuality into regionalist themes. The Milkmaid is a tender portrait that perfectly exemplifies Varma’s captivating painting style.
The Milkmaid was painted on a rectangle-shaped canvas, which shows the figure from the waist to the top of the head. In the year that The Milkmaid was painted, Raja Ravi Varma received the Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the British Empire to distinctive Indian citizens. This was a signal of Raja Ravi Varma being recognized as a vital art figure and an international one. Moreover, because of his importance to his country’s art, today a yearly Prize for new artists is named after him and is a high honor for contemporary artists.
The Milkmaid was painted with a warm and brown palette. A young woman is posing for the painter, as inferred through the work’s somewhat fast manner, the abstract background, and stillness. She looks to the left side and holds a yellow jar with her left hand. With the right one, she holds the fabric wrapped around her head. The lady has an expression of introversion as if she is feeling slightly shy being observed for such a long time. Yet, Ravi Varma was capable of capturing the distinctness of her face, painting it with detail and dignity.
The work shows the deep technique that Ravi Varma developed through the years, employing Realist and Romanticist trends into his regional subjects. The volume of fabric is perfectly depicted. She has white and black bracelets, and her vestments are yellow and burgundy with black details. Because of its close temperature in all colors, the work has a strong sense of unity, and the red makeup circle on her forehead becomes a point of visual attraction. The Milkmaid is a beautiful portrait, probably done as a studio study, and an astounding picture displaying all Raja Ravi Varma’s techniques.
