Known as one of the most talented great masters of the Renaissance, Raphael was born in Italy in the year 1483. The painter and architect was the child of Giovanni Santi, court painting of the Duke of Urbino, and Elisabetta Gonzaga, a noblewoman renowned as a cultured and virtuous figure. His friendship with Leonardo da Vinci vastly influenced him, as well as Michelangelo, made him a complete and renowned artist, admired for his ideal of human greatness, and much more.
Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino produced many artworks in his short life. Died at 37 years old, the artist had time to present us with masterpieces that are still unmatched in creativity and talent. His greatest achievement, the Stanze di Raffaello, famous for their frescoes and delicate paintings, is a set of rooms commissioned by Popes Julius II and Leo X. They can be found in the Vatican and were originally made to outshine the rooms of Alexander VI, a predecessor and rival Pope.
Raphael’s work can be divided into three different moments. The first one, as Perugino’s apprentice, where he gave his first steps on his career. The second, learning and evolving the cultural tradition in Florence, and the third in Rome, when he produced his most celebrated artworks and perished.
This magnificent painting is an extraction of the Sistine Madonna, the lower part. Requested by Pope Julius II in honor of his uncle Pope Sixtus IV, the great master Raffaello produced what was later called by Vasari “a truly rare and extraordinary work”. One of his latest madonnas, made to be displayed in the altarpiece for the basilica church of the Benedictine Monastery of San Sisto, has as the main character the Virgin Mary, holding infant Jesus with her hands. Saint Barbara and Saint Sixtus are also in the canvas, above the clouds. At the bottom, we can see two winged cherubins, resting their elbows in the clouds.
The child angels are famous on their own. Inspired by two children that he saw on the street when they were looking wistfully at a baker’s shop, Raphael got struck by their posture and depicted the cherubins with them in mind. That part of the Sistine Madonna was deeply reproduced through multiple media like t-shirts, music albums, stamps, and many others, turning this work of art one of the most popular paintings of the Renaissance.
