Born in 1483, Raffaelo Sanzio da Urbino was a renowned painter and architect of the Renaissance. A native of Italy, Urbino, he had in his father, Giovanni Santi, the inspiration that he needed to choose what path he should follow. Orphaned at 11, he became the apprentice of Pietro Perugino, and after a few years, Raphael's talent was so sharp that one could not point out which paintings were made by him or his master.
Since the early years of his career, he was a highly productive and requested artist. Responsible for some of the most celebrated frescoes and paints ever made, he is part of the trinity of masters of that time, at the side of Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci.
Raphael's career can be separated into three different phases. Firstly, his early years as an apprentice in Perugino's workshop. Then, the four years that he spent in Florence sharpening his technique and his cultural capability. And finally, his years in Rome, where he worked for Popes Julius II and Leo X, being commissioned to his most significant work, The Stanza.
The Disputa was the first of four rooms commissioned by the Pope, and it is located at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. Part of the Stanza della Segnatura, now known as Stanze di Raffaello, this masterpiece fresco shows multiple biblical figures, with Christ in the top with a golden aureole. At his left, Virgin Mary, and his brother John Baptist at the right. There are multiple other figures, including Adam, Moses, and the apostle Paul, that can be seen in the far right holding a sword and a book.
The painted scene is a representation of Heaven and Earth, with the Godly figures and their angels guiding and protecting humankind. In the lower part, we can see theologists debating the Holy Eucharist, represented by the Blood, Soul, Body, and Divinity of Jesus. Some predecessor Popes are as well depicted in the fresco, along with other priests and saints. The poet and playwright Dante Alighieri can be seen wearing red and using a laurel wreath, symbolizing his greatness as an artist.
Sanzio created this artwork not only to represent Christ's adoration but also to encourage the study of the religion and the collaborative work between Heaven, the prophets, and those who would spread the sacred words of God through the masses.
