Raffaelo Sanzio, son of Giovanni Santi, was born in 1483 in the city of Urbino, Italy. Also known as Raphael, he is one of the most popular and talented architects and painters of the Renaissance period, producing some of the most impressive artworks of all time.
Taken as an apprentice since eight years old by Perugino, the student impressed everyone with his progress, learning advanced techniques, and being recognized as a grandmaster at only seventeen years old. Orphaned at eleven, he then became responsible for his father’s workshop, surpassing his technique and recognition not much after this.
The period he spent in Pietro Perugino’s studio was very prolific. He refined his technique, and as an example of Raphael’s capacity in those years, he presented Marriage Of the Virgin, The Knight’s Dream, The Three Graces, and Crucifixion, all performed at Perugia.
Sanzio reached his peak a few years later when he was invited by Pope Julius II to move to Rome and paint frescoes that later were named The Stanze in the Vatican. In this phase of his career, he absorbed much of the talent of other great masters from the Renaissance, like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci, creating works just as inspired.
Commissioned by Pope Leo X, after the death of his predecessor Julius II, this is a magnificent oil painting of the Queen of Naples, Joanna of Aragon. It was made by Raphael to be given to the King of France, Francis I, who was known for having multiple paintings of beautiful women in his collection.
With gentle and inspired strokes, Joanna is depicted with an imponent pose. She is using an expensive three-quarter red velvet coat with golden details, a clear example of the fashion of the XVI century. The model is facing the viewer, and we can see Leonardo Da Vinci influence the artist in the way her eyes are represented. Her left hand rests on her leg while she touches the fur on her shoulders with the other hand. Her expression is, at the same time kind and intimidating, and her fair skin creates an amazing contrast with the rich background in the painting.
The masterpiece has precise drawing and high-quality finish, a mark of Raffaello’s work. It was completed in 1518, and now can be found at the Louvre museum, Paris.
