Raphael’s Madonna della Sedia, painted a short time before his death aged only 37, is a Madonna painting of the High Italian Renaissance. It is one of the centrepieces of the Palazzo Pitti collection in Florence and draws a wealth of devotional visitors, both religious and secular, who marvel at this elegant achievement of harmony, balance, and composition. Madonna della Sedia is a figurative reproduction of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Christ while a youthful John the Baptist looks on, and was painted in Raphael’s Roman period, which saw the young artist move from Florence to Rome where he remained until his death. His Roman period was characterised by frantic creative output and regular commissions. At the personal request of the new Pope Julius II Raphael was asked to paint frescos for his own private library at the Vatican Palace. He joined a number of other artists who were working on adjoining rooms, most notably Michelangelo who was working on his commission to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling. His Roman Period also saw the artist move away from the linear approach to form that characterised his time in Florence. Raphael instead moved towards warmer, more familial rendering of his subjects – a style that would culminate in his masterful Madonna della Sedia.
Forming the trinity of great Renaissance masters, alongside Da Vinci and Michelangelo, Raphael is best known for his figurative reproductions of the Madonna and for his Vatican frescoes painted on commission for Pope Julius II. Madonna della Sedia unifies these two dominant pursuits of Raphael’s later life. After falling out of critical favour after his death to his two stellar contemporaries, Raphael enjoyed a resurgence of popularly in the nineteenth century when his carefully balanced harmonies of light, color, and movement were seen as the highest Renaissance model. Always the hungry Philomath, Raphael is now rightly regarded as the embodiment of the Italian Renaissance ideal.
