Raffaello da Urbino was one of the most talented Renaissance architects and painters of the XVI century. Child of Giovanni Santi and born in 1483, in Italy, he was one of the most productive great masters that we know of, delivering multiple masterpieces and some of the most famous paintings that we have in the world.
His list of achievements is outstanding. Even dying at a young age, 37 years old, he was able to produce great works like the Stanze or just Raphael Rooms, with an honorable mention of the The School of Athens, The Parnassus and La Disputa. He was an artist of astonishing capacity, admired for his perfectionism, his delicate strokes and for painting the ideal of human splendor.
Giorgio Vasari, a notable biographer of Italian artists, separated Raphael’s career into three different phases. The beginning, when he was taken as a Pietro Perugino apprentice in the city of Umbria. The second phase, between 1504 and 1508, when he sharpened his skills and learned the Florence artistic tradition. And the final and third phase, when he moved to Rome and was at his peak, producing the most exquisite paintings of his portfolio, working for two Popes, Julius II and Leo X.
The artwork Madonna of the Meadow is one of the most iconic paintings of Raphael. Created as a gift to Taddeo Gaddi, his patron in Florence, the magnificent work of art presents us with the Virgin Mary supporting the infant Jesus with her hands, made with gracious strokes. At his side, we can see John The Baptist holding a cross. As a tribute to John the Baptist, the object is both a toy and a symbol of passion.
In this masterpiece, Mary is wearing a gold-bordered blue mantle, set against a red dress, with her left leg forming a triangular geometric structure, and this is an evident influence from Michelangelo’s work. Her blue mantle symbolizes the Church, and the red dress refers to Jesus’s death. This group of compositions portrays the encounter of Christ and John the Baptist, as children. It is assumed that Saint John has seen Jesus as the savior even in his childhood, and Raphael made this clear in the painting, letting Jesus take the cross from John.
