The legendary painter and architect Raphael, baptized as Raffaello Sanzio, was born in the early months of 1483. Child of the Urbino’s Duke court painter, Giovanni Santi, had an innate talent for arts from a young age. In his career, he was influenced by some of the most famous and skillful artists of the Renaissance, like Fra Bartolommeo, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci.
He became Pietro Perugino’s apprentice a few after his mother’s demise, at eight years old. Next to his master, Sanzio imbibed much of his techniques and style. In the year 1501, Raffaello was declared a great master, and during this phase, he perfected and absorbed the rich and glorious Florence culture and art. He was responsible for multiple paintings and frescoes, both in churches and for rich noblemen.
The artist had a prolific career, producing multiple works of art in his short span of life. Dead in 1520, Raphael was buried in the Pantheon. He left his studio and belongings to his faithful pupils Giulio Romano and Penni.
This masterpiece is an excellent example of the treasures that the High Renaissance produced. Already in his Roman’s phase, Sanzio was commissioned by a bolognese nobleman named Vincenzo Ercolani. He intended to recreate the scene where the prophet Ezekiel has a vision of God hovering in the sky with all his magnificence.
In the center of the stage, there is God, with all his majesty and grandeur. Raphael refers to Saint Jerome when he decides to use three animals and an angel to carry God. The ox is painted to represent Luke. The eagle, John, and the lion, Mark. The angel is painted representing Matthew, being the quartet the ones who brought the word of God to Ezekiel.
Delicate and detailed, the heavy clouds in the sky contrast with the bright aura of the Divine and his chariot depicted in the canvas. In the left lower part of the painting, Ezekiel can be seen being illuminated by the heavens, at the moment that he was blessed with the vision. He is obfuscated by God’s size and splendor, on purpose and portrayed this way to represent how humble the prophet was and how important this event was in his life.
When Napoleon’s troops invaded Italy at the end of the XVII century, they stole the canvas from Florence. The masterpiece was returned later in 1816 and is housed until this day at the Galleria Palatina of Palazzo Pitti.
