Like many artists of the Baroque period, Rembrandt recreated the scene of Christ descending from the cross more than once, among several other religious scenes. That being said, Descent from the Cross is one of the most historical and important representations of this moment. Rembrandt created a unique composition and one of the most famous paintings about the religious passage.
Its uniqueness relies not only on the beautiful technique, composition and lighting techniques used but also in how he chose to represent the elements. The scene is crowded with people, yet each of them has a memorable facial expression. People around have their mouths opened, they are holding onto each other, some are staring at Christ, and all of them are represented with great drama and emotion.
The lighting is elaborated. In general, the composition is set on Rembrandt’s chiaroscuro trademark where the whole environment is darkened towards the border of the piece, up to the point that the corners are nearly pitch black. Normally a figure stands out from the background, as a holy creature of light emerging from the dark. But as this painting portrays several people, the focus of lighting are carefully chosen. Of course, the concentration of light colors lay over the image of Jesus Christ, becoming the focal point of the vertical composition. The light shines from the bottom to the top, as suggest the shadows cast by Christ and the people.
The composition is very balanced, and the mass of people along with the cross and Jesus coming down from it form a triangular shape that gets lighter and brighter on the top. The holy shroud awaits for Christ laying on the ground and is also one of the parts of the painting that received special lighting treatment. On the right of the painting, in the middle of the crowd is the Virgin Mary, Jesus’ mother. She is also one of the spots of bright light and is portrayed fainted, being held by the people around her. She has her eyes shut and wears a white cloth around her head. Her face is skinny, and her body language and opened mouth show immense emotion and sadness. Some details of a city and some foliage are subtly drawn onto the corners of the painting, but the lack of light on the borders make them look fainted and subtle, contrasting with the central figures.
