History Painting is the name given to an early oil painting created by Rembrandt around the year of 1626. Researchers haven’t reached a consensus about the actual subject matter of this nameless painting; thus it was generically named “History Painting.” This artwork was painted at the beginning of Rembrandt's career, so the most unusual characteristic is the lack of dramatics and contrast present in his most famous artworks. The painting is very light and bright, and it even shows some Renaissance influences. The layout is very flat, and the colors are equally vibrant, with not much light and shadow work.
In the composition, a few men gather on a square or yard of a castle. There are few references in it, but it’s hard to point out exactly which historical moment the artist would be representing — hypothesis range from biblical stories and ancient history to modern history. On the left, two men stand out from the rest. Both are dressed in elegant vests. The figure to the left wears a golden ornamented tunic and a puffy green hat with white feathers and golden details and a long white scarf. He looks like he is the assistant or second in command of the man that stands on his right-hand side. This man is unquestionably a king. He wears a beautiful golden crown and holds a scepter that he points at the rest of the crowd in the right of the picture. His garments are even more ornamented and luxurious than the ones that the man on the left wears. His green vests are completely decorated and embroidered. He wears green pants and green ankle-high boots.
There are four men talking to him that can be knights or soldiers. Two of them are kneeling, while one of them is talking to the king and lifting two fingers. He wears a chest plate and puffy pink garments. The other man standing, an older gentleman in orange and green vests is the only person in this picture that is staring straight onto the viewer. His eyes are very expressive and create a weird communication between the observer and the work, as the other characters are immersed in their own activities, unaware.
Behind them, there is a large commotion of people. Some people form a wall of observers behind these men in the front. While others are painted in details, but they start to fade as the crowd moves to the background. There is a monument on the square where the painting is located, and some curious observers climbed onto it to better see the scene. It’s possible to observe the tips of spikes and spears, and some of the architecture on the back.
