Old Man Praying is an oil on canvas that is currently located at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio. The old man sits in the dark, no environment or background were drawn onto the painting. He has a large book on his lap, possibly the Bible. It’s possible to see some writing and a small drawing that could be a decorated capital letter, very common for books and Bibles at the time.
The old book is opened in the middle and has old loose pages. It’s a large book that extends to the whole area of the man's lap. The old man leans his arms on the bible and puts his hands gently together in prayer. He is wearing very large and thick brown vests. The light shines onto the old man from the left side, so his right arm and wrists blur into the dark background.
The man has his eyes closed. He has a thick mass of grey hair, beard, and eyebrows. These are drawn into a very detailed level. It’s possible to see the individual brushstrokes that form the hair, in shades of grey, white and yellow. The beard is thicker and more curly than the hair, where the brushwork gets thicker and lighter colors compose the limited palette.
His face and hands are the focus of the painting. Both are heavily worked and full of little details that form the wrinkles, spots, and veins that you would see on the skin of a senior man. His eyes are nearly shut, and he looks profoundly concentrated. There is a heavy contrast on his face, the right side being lightened and the left side dark and shaded.
By the end of his career, Rembrandt focused on religious imagery. While the painting has classical elements from this phase of the painter, like the layout of the central figure standing on a simple or nonexistent background, the color palette and manipulation are somewhat unusual for this era on Rembrandt’s career. While most of his art pieces of the time would be mostly dark with spots of hard light creating intense drama and contrast, this one doesn’t have an intense contrast and the palette is subtle. The lack of contrast is probably one of the most important details of the painting and what makes it unique and so valuable.
