This oil painting is one of the many commissions Rembrandt received at the time, and it was painted over the year of 1636. This commission, though, was requested by no one less than Constantijn Huygens, secretary of the Prince of Orange. It’s part of a trio of paintings that represent the Entombment, the Resurrection and the Ascension of Christ. Although this commission was a big step for Rembrandt’s career and a big chance to further establish him as a distinguished painter, the final piece was somewhat neglected at the time. Some researchers suggest that the lack of recognition of this picture comes from the fact that Rembrandt was trying to emulate Rubens’ contemplative style and stepped away from his own dramatic and contrasting style. Although, it doesn’t change many of the traditional characteristics found in most of Rembrandt’s pieces at the time, like the meaningful eyes and the central figure as being the only bright element in darkened surroundings.
The painting is vertical and arched on the top. Christ is the central figure, a characteristic that can be related to Rembrandt protestant background, and he ascends to heaven escorted by several little angels. The painting doesn’t have that focus on the central figure, yet it is filled with contrast. The light divides heaven from earth and surrounds the whole area around Christ. There is a divine light portrayed in a yellow and blue color scheme that comes from above the Christ, representing God and the Holy Spirit. In the middle, it’s possible to see the shape of a white dove.
On earth, the disciples observe the ascension. People are kneeling around in a circle, amazed. It is said that the buyer of the piece, Constantijn Huygens, asked Rembrandt to portray himself as one of the disciples on the ground. On the left, there is some foliage that helps frame the environment. In the clouds, there are several angels. The further they are, the more their image fades. Christ is stepping on a white cloud that is being carried by the little angels. He is dressed in several layers of white robes. He stretches his arms to the sky, and on his opened palms it’s possible to see the stigmata. His head is leaning back, looking above, while his brown hair and beard contrast with the pale skin.
