This is an oil painting from the year 1631, and despite the state of preservation not being ideal, it’s possible to recognize Rembrandt’s signature. Among several dubious paintings from the Baroque period, this one was authenticated by the author, and that makes it especially valuable. Rembrandt made remarkable portraits of seniors all throughout his career, and he would represent them with delicacy and subtlety rarely seen before.
The prophetess is sitting on a chair or couch reading a large book with loose pages. It’s often called as Rembrandt’s Mother, as some researches would indicate she was referenced on the piece.
Some essential elements must be mentioned. Rembrandt used one of his most known and exceptional techniques to represent the lady: the tenebrism. This technique makes the painting look dark and gloomy, and yet the light that comes from behind the woman shines onto her vests and the books she reads, so she is a bright figure emerging from her dark surroundings.
History tells that Prophetess Anna would be present when baby Jesus was first brought to the Temple by Joseph and Mary. She looked at the baby and without anyone saying a word, pointing out that he was the long-awaited Christ Messiah.
In this portrait, she wears a shiny brown hat, probably made of leather with a light, silky brown ribbon tying it up. The hat almost covers her face, but it’s possible to see her sweet elderly expression and her grey hair. Her face is very blurry, both due to the technique and to the state of preservation of the painting. Still, it’s possible to see her light aging eyes reading the pages. Her mouth is ajar, and her face shows complete concentration.
She wears a red coat that has grey cottony fur over her shoulders. The drapery falls onto her lap showing large folds of heavy cloth. The dark red coat was fully painted with textures, revealing an intricate detail of the embroidery. The coat hides most of the details of the ocher-colored chair, that is all carved in details.
The light shines on to the pages and reflects on her face, so the light that shows her expression is very delicate, from a secondary source. Even though the text is not readable, it seems like it was written in Hebrew.
