Joan of Arc is a unique 82 x 62 cm (32.2 x 24.4 in) oil on canvas by the distinguished British artist Sir John Everett Millais. The original piece was painted in 1865, and it is now part of a private collection. Sir John Everett Millais is best known as one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The Pre-Raphaelites were against the dogmatic trends of Academic painting and were inspired by the art before Raphael, especially the painters from the Northern Renaissance. Their works also dealt heavily with literary themes, medieval imagery, and a naturalistic tendency. Joan of Arc is one of Millais’ historical portraits, a genre that he dedicated himself to in his later life.
The work characterizes a new period in Millais’ body of work. From the 1850s on, Millais was distancing himself from the aesthetic predicates of the Pre-Raphaelites, going towards a more political and less Realistic tendency. Millais was also working mainly as an engraver, getting increasingly interested in etchings and printmaking, some of them related to Alfred Tennyson, a significant 19th-century British poet. In 1863, Millais became a full Academician, and, ironically, his work became more akin to the pictures that the Pre-Raphaelites used to criticize.
Joan of Arc is at the composition center. She is depicted with long blond hair and light blue eyes, with her hair combed back and falling on her back. The picture’s lighting is coming from the up left corner, illuminating that side of her face, while the right one has a soft shadow. The most visually interesting aspect of the painting is Joan’s armor. The metal surface reflects the lighting and creates a beautiful effect that attracts the audience’s eye. The lighting gradually enters the metal and is reflected in some areas, especially around her chest.
The woman holds the handle of a sword with her right hand, and the left holds the sword’s blade. Below her impressive armor, she wears red clothing, which matches the color of her cheeks. On her left side is the helmet that she is wearing, almost eclipsed by the darkness. The ground that she sits on is light gray, while the wall behind her is made of dark brown wood. Joan of Arc is a beautiful portrait where Millais exercised the best of his oil painting technique.

You may choose to purchase your painting framed, in which case, it will arrive "ready to hang". We offer more than 20 beautiful models, all hand finished and expertly assembled by our experienced framers.
Note that for safety reasons we can only frame up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached the framing option is automatically disabled.
If you are planning to frame your painting yourself, use an existing frame, or frame it locally, you may choose to order your painting with a stretching service, meaning that it will arrive mounted on wooden bars.
If you're considering not framing your painting at all, you may opt for a Gallery Wrap. The term Gallery Wrap refers to the way the canvas is stretched, which is by wrapping it around thick stretcher bars, about 1.5 inch thick, with the canvas being secured to the back rather than the sides of those bars.
All orders ship with UPS, FedEx or DHL and will arrive directly to your home or office. A tracking number will be emailed to you as soon as the order leaves our studio so you can track it online. All orders ship express and usually arrive within 4-5 days from the shipping date. Due to shipping restraints, many of our framed, stretched, and oversize paintings may take 6-21 days for arrival depending on the safest route determined by the postal service.
Unframed paintings are covered with a special protective film, are gently rolled and then placed inside a strong specially designed tube.
Stretched, Gallery Wrapped and Framed paintings are covered with protective bubble wrap, separated by foam board and then carefully put into the cardboard box.
